Dear Island Def Jam A&R Division/Mr. L.A. Reid:
I have a few major grievances I’d like to express regarding Janet Jackson.
It has become painfully clear (by her number of impressions) that radio is NOT supporting her and something needs to be done to change this.
“Discipline” is a truly amazing album, in my opinion, but if no one is hearing the singles being released to various media outlets…it will inevitably fail.
I don’t know if the lack of radio support is stemming from her all too publicized Super Bowl mishap from 2004, but she has been slighted long enough.
The media is continuing to punish her for something that was beyond her control and it’s ridiculous!
Additionally, her overall promotional push for the album is almost non-existent. While I and others realize that she was ill for several weeks following the release of “Discipline”, she now needs to be seen PERFORMING the NEW TRACKS off the album on Letterman, Oprah, Leno, SNL, etc.
Obviously, if radio is not playing her music and she is not seen performing anywhere, the masses won’t know about the album and those who do…will begin to lose interest.
Everything seems lackluster at best, from an exposure standpoint, which makes no sense for an artist of Janet’s caliber.
Also, I’d like to suggest there not simply be focus on the United States exclusively. As an international pop music icon, Janet needs to be seen around the world!
Fans in both Europe and Japan are particularly miffed that it’s been ages since Janet performed anywhere in their respective countries.
That leads me to another point: She needs to tour, and sooner rather than later.
At this stage, it looks like the album won’t last on the charts until the alleged tour kicks off in mid-September.
A Summer tour would be more apropos and could give “Discipline” a resurgence on the charts.
The entire Janet fan community is simply disheartened to see her not being played by radio, rarely seen on television (beyond BET), not performing NEW music on any of the various late night or prime time shows, not doing “international promo”, and virtually…not shifting units.
We expected and deserve more…and so does Janet.
Lastly, whoever is suggesting she create dark videos (like “Feedback” and Rock With U”) is misguiding her.
We need to see fresh, innovative videos that coincide with the stellar music.
But it’s truly not too late to change things around, as I think this project has legs.
I just hope Island Def Jam isn’t focusing more on Mariah, who was given a proper and well mapped out chance to “comeback” following two consecutive “flops”…versus supporting Janet to the fullest extent.
Hopefully my suggestions will be seen and won’t fall on deaf ears nor blind eyes.
